11.00 Jack Hegarty on “Experiences About the Restoration of the Droitwich Canal”

Jack Hegarty, the “Star” of the CRT video entitled “Water Adds Value” (on the landing page of our website) will be sharing his experiences about the restoration of the Droitwich Canal. Jack was, and still is, working as a Senior Local Authority Officer and, as he says in the video, made “one of the best investments ever” of £1M in the canal’s restoration. But the benefits this has brought about significantly outweigh this investment, as you will hear. Jack is also Chairman of the Avon Navigation Trust; thus indicating that he is involved with the waterways on a personal level as well as political. Not seen the video? Please do have look at it because it is truly inspirational and will enable you to better understand just why we are all involved in canal restoration.

12.15 AGM.

13.00 Buffet Lunch including vegetarian options, with gateaux or sweet. See over for details of Buffet Lunch.

14.00 Neil Clarke on “Thomas Eyton and the Shropshire and Shrewsbury Canals”

Neil has served on the committees of a number of local history groups including as chairman of the Friends of the Ironbridge Gorge Museum, edits various local magazines and is vice-chairman of Wellington History Group and a council member of Shropshire Archaeological & Historical Society.

A railway enthusiast from boyhood, Neil has researched the industrial and transport history of East Shropshire since the early 1960s, when he became a member of the Railway & Canal Historical Society. He has lectured widely and published work on various aspects of industrial and transport history, including “Crossing the River: Fords & Ferries on the Shropshire Severn”(RCHS, 2015), and four books on East Shropshire in Amberley Publications’ Through Time series – Railways (2015), Waterways (2015), Roads (2016) and Industries (2018)

And afterwards: A visit to the Berwick Tunnel
